Contemplation (n.) is an accordion artist’s book that includes altered details of illustrations from a book on Greek architecture, and a page with the etymology of the word contemplation. The images were drawn and painted on used paperback pages, and then attached to the book pages. Reflection on each image resulted in a specific accompanying word: care, plan, remains, models, revive. Useful words to search “for a new normal.” For example, the illustration of broken pottery was redrawn as repaired with the caption, “Care.” The plan of a temple was simplified to symbolize the intention manifested by preparing a plan.
I paint to explore how abstraction, color, rhythm, or repetition can echo wonder and curiosity. Color gives voice to my musings on time and space. Stories of life past moving and repeating into the present seeing a future.
Thoughts on...In the Universe Day and Night In the Universe
Thoughts on...In the Universe Day and Night In the Universe is a collection of visual odes to the mystery and amazement of reconciling my place, my wonder with the beyond past the sky I see. To this end, I repurposed pages from a used science fiction paperback. Areas of each page were defined geometrically by the print – whether it be by a title, page number, paragraph, etc. – and painted using a 3-color palette. Penciled lines were added extending from some painted areas. One of a kind.
