Emergence is the topic of this year’s Philadelphia Center for the Book Members’ Exhibition. What does emergence mean to you? How would something that was previously hidden be displayed? In the scientific world, properties or behaviors in an entity can emerge when that entity interacts with a larger external whole - like each unique snowflake emerging into the air. This exhibition will represent books that express something new coming into view, something hidden being exposed, something new coming into being. These books can be symbolic of anything that physically emerges such as a flower from the soil or symbolizing some concept that can emerge such as a memory from the past. This year, we invited our members and emerging book artists who are new to the book arts to submit up to three works that evoke emergence. Emerging artists could submit an artist’ book representing the emergence theme or any theme of their choosing.
